How neurodivergence affects the way students learn

When your child receives a neurodivergent diagnosis, such as autism, ADHD or dyslexia, it’s common to have many feelings and reactions. You might be feeling relief or validation, because there’s finally an explanation for what you’ve been noticing. At the same time, you might also feel uncertain, overwhelmed or like you’re left with more questions than answers. 

Mixed feelings are completely normal. A diagnosis begins to explain why school and homework feels like a struggle. But it often doesn’t tell you what your child’s everyday experience is like, or what’s going on for them on a Tuesday afternoon when they’re seemingly “putting off” their homework. 

This article is a straightforward introduction to what neurodivergence means, the ways it can affect how a student learns, and what this might mean for your child. 

What “neurodivergent” actually means

Neurodivergent is a broad umbrella term used to describe people whose brains function, learn or process information differently from what is considered typical. It is often used to describe ADHD, autism, dyslexia, and other learning differences, but it can encompass many other diagnoses and experiences too (there is no single list). 

Instead of viewing differences as deficits, the closely related concept of neurodiversity acknowledges there is no single “right” way for the brain to function. It suggests there is natural variation in how brains develop and work, and that we all experience and interact with the world in different ways. 

This means that a neurodivergent brain isn’t a broken version of a typical one. It’s wired differently, and that can affect how young people learn. Because many aspects of school and society are built around one particular way of thinking and learning, neurodivergent students can experience real challenges in the classroom and with studying, even when they are as capable as their peers. 

How neurodivergence can affect learning 

There’s no single learning profile that fits all neurodivergent people. Even two students with the same diagnosis can have different strengths and challenges at school. So, instead of a checklist, it’s more useful to look at a few common academic moments, and how neurodivergent students might experience them differently.

Let’s start with a familiar classroom instruction: “Everyone get organised and start writing a paragraph”. For most of the class, that’s a routine task. However, it can be surprisingly demanding for a neurodivergent student, because there are several mental steps involved. They need to stop what they are currently doing, shift attention to the teacher, process and interpret the instruction, plan what to do, then actually start – all before a single word is written. 

These steps draw on multiple interlinked thinking skills, such as attention, working memory and executive function. For a student with difficulty in any of these areas, the seemingly simple instruction can pose a real challenge. A student who looks like they’re stalling may actually be stuck somewhere in that process. 

There are a few underlying mechanisms that can help explain why. 

Attention conflicts

For students with difficulties sustaining and directing their attention, such as those with ADHD, the classroom can be a hard place to learn. Background noise, the conversations of other students, external interruptions – all of this competes for attention that’s meant to be on the teacher and task. This is one reason why students often "forget" things they were in the room for: the information was not fully taken in to begin with, so there’s nothing to recall later. It’s often not a memory problem so much as an attention one. The same thing happens at home. Your teenager trying to study in a room with their phone lighting up every few minutes might look like they aren’t staying on task, when really their environment is asking a lot of their attention. 

Working memory difficulties 

Working memory is the ability to hold and manipulate information in your mind. For example, reading a maths problem while remembering the steps needed to solve it. A common multi-step instruction like “get out your book, turn to page 10 and underline an important quote” asks a student to hold three pieces of information at once. For a student with working memory difficulties, it’s common for the third step to fall away by the time they’ve completed the first. Whilst on the surface it might look like they weren’t listening, there actually wasn’t enough mental room left to hold and work with it. 

Executive functioning challenges

Executive functions are a range of interlinked higher-level thinking skills that gradually develop throughout childhood and adolescence (and can take over 25 years to fully mature!). You can think of executive functions as the CEO of the brain. Just as a CEO doesn’t do every job in a company but plans, prioritises, delegates, monitors progress and solves problems, executive functions help us organise and regulate our thoughts and behaviour. Almost every part of learning in a classroom draws on executive functions. Students must continuously plan, organise, remember instructions, initiate tasks, regulate their attention, monitor their progress and adapt when things change. A student who leaves an assignment until the night before it’s due isn’t necessarily unmotivated or unable to do the task. They might just find it harder to create and follow an internal plan than their peers. 

Emotional regulation

Emotions and learning are closely linked. When a student is overwhelmed, frustrated, embarrassed in front of classmates or losing confidence it can affect their ability to take in new information at that moment. A student who struggles to answer when called upon in class might be seen as not knowing the content, but in reality their brain could be too full of worries to respond. It’s similar to how we can’t think straight when we’re in the middle of a heated argument and our emotions have taken over.

Why this matters 

Understanding the mechanisms behind a young person’s learning challenges matters because it opens the door to the right kind of support. Reframing "not trying hard enough" as "having difficulty with executive function" changes what you do next, moving you and your child from frustration towards a helpful strategy. Importantly, none of these challenges rule out neurodivergent students succeeding academically and reaching (and often exceeding!) their goals. 

It’s also worth resisting a purely deficit-based approach. Neurodivergent students bring real strengths. Think about your child and how they approach the world that’s uniquely theirs. Maybe they have a strong ability to focus on a topic they love, a creative way of solving problems, or a kind and loyal approach to friendships. These strengths deserve just as much attention as their challenges. 

If you’re a parent taking this in for the first time, it’s normal for it to feel like a lot. The main point is that your child’s brain isn’t working the “wrong” way; it’s working differently. Understanding the mechanisms behind learning can be a starting point for figuring out how best to support them.
